Homework
This goes out on a Monday and needs to be returned on a Friday. Maths homework relates to the work your child did in class the previous week. It may be that the maths your child is doing looks very different to the maths you did when you were at school. If you are not sure about any of the methods we use please call in and ask. We are only too happy to show you how we do it!
Reading
Your child will read each week, in class, as part of a guided reading session. In order to practise the skills they are learning in the classroom, it is essential that they practise regularly. Ideally we would like you to hear your child read for 5 or 10 minutes at least three times a week. We know this can be tricky and so for those children who cannot manage this we will hold a reading club on a Monday playtime to allow your child the chance to practise these skills. We monitor the home school reading books quite closely, as this is our only way of knowing who is practising regularly. This enables us to identify readers who may be struggling due to lack of practise or if they are practising regularly may need extra help of a different kind. It is essential therefore that you sign or initial the home school reading book every time you hear them read.
PE
Indoor PE is on Thursday and outdoor PE on Monday. Please make sure your child has the appropriate kit with them, including a warm jumper, as if the weather is dry we will be going outside. They also go swimming on a Wednesday morning until Easter.
The Curriculum
We aim to make learning as fun and meaningful as possible. We cover three main topics across the year. We make these as cross curricular as possible. We also include literacy and numeracy wherever we can. This involves teaching a set of skills and then giving the children a practical problem linked to the topic.

| A geography and science based topic that looks at rainforests around the world. During this topic we look at weather patterns, conservation issues, habitats of animals, food chains and what plants need to grow well. We also design animal sanctuaries and build scale models, this involves lots of maths! |
A history and science based topic. During this we look at why the Romans invaded, what the Celts thought about it, some of the major battles they had and the legacy the Romans left for Great Britain. |
A science, DT and literacy based topic. We consider the best materials to build a space suit from, thinking of the insulation and conductive properties of fabric and consider the best design for a space rocket. We build a model of our rocket and imagine the distant worlds we could land on during our journey. |
