School Council

For many years all the decisions about children were made by adults. This was thought to be best because adults are older and have more experience, training and qualifications

But adults didn’t always make the right decisions - sometimes because they hadn’t talked with the children about the issues.
All the countries of the world got together and agreed that children must be given rights. Plus, sometimes their ideas are actually better than the adults! So the Government decided that adults must listen to children before making a decision about them.

Think of all the decisions that are made about life at Central...

  • How can we make lessons more interesting?
  • What equipment should we buy for the playground?
  • What trips should we organise?
  • How can we help pupils make friends?

You probably have ideas about these questions, and so will other children at Central. But how can the staff listen to all the ideas? That would take too long, and nothing would get done. Pupils need a way of discussing issues, and making decisions which will help everyone in school. Schools work better when pupils and staff are working together and listening to each other.

 School Council

At Central every class in Year 2 through to Year 4 elects a representative to sit on the School Council and:

  • Go to meetings and take part in discussions
  • Take the views of the class to the School Council
  • Let the class know what was discussed at meetings
  • Be involved in projects that the School Council runs

This is our 2009 - 10 School Council during one of their first meetings of the year. Some of the things they will be working on soon include looking at redeveloping one of our yards, doing some work to find out when our children do their best work and helping to write a home-school agreement which will set out what children, parents and school expect of each other.

At Central the School Council even has a say in choosing new members of staff!
